This project proposes an intervention in a historic building, specifically the Church of San Juan de los Reyes, located in the Albaicín neighborhood of Granada. The proposal seeks to develop a new use for the space, maintaining its structure and respecting the original architectural elements.

Research process and methodology

For the development of the project, several visits to the building were made in order to collect technical and visual data, including sketches, photographs and measurements. Based on this information, creative exercises were carried out in class with the objective of generating different proposals, from which three were selected for evaluation. Finally, one of them was chosen for its complete development.

From the beginning, the need to respect the original structure of the building was identified, avoiding invasive interventions that would alter its walls, floors and slabs. This approach posed a challenge in terms of adapting the design to the pre-existing space.

Concept and final proposal

The proposal selected for the intervention is the creation of a Couples Exchange Club, a concept that contrasts radically with the traditional religious use of the building. The choice of this proposal responds to the interest of generating a unique sensory and visual experience, playing with the materiality, lighting and spatial arrangement to build a sensual and elegant environment.

Design and materiality of the space

To achieve the desired atmosphere, we worked with a chromatic palette based on red, burgundy and black tones, materials such as velvet, glass and reflective metal sheets, and a lighting scheme that combines a dim central lamp with more subtle points of light in red tones.

The furnishings have been carefully designed to reinforce the theme of the space, using leather and satin, materials associated with desire and power. Different zones have been defined within the club, including:

  • Central area with bar and high tables.
  • Private spaces with sofas and beds
  • Bathrooms with an aesthetic inspired by pool changing rooms
  • Private master suite with pool

The use of removable panels allows the intervention to be reversible, ensuring the preservation of the original building.

Justification and values of the project

The proposal plays with the contradiction between the place and its new use, exploring concepts such as lust, desire, sensuality, freedom and power. A solution has been sought that, in addition to challenging conventions, maintains a careful aesthetic and an immersive spatial experience.

This project demonstrates how it is possible to redefine the use of a historic space without altering its architectural essence, proposing an innovative intervention that respects the heritage while introducing new functionality. A balanced proposal between the sensual and the elegant has been achieved, designed to provide a unique experience in the city of Granada.
