In this project we have been asked to address the interior design in the cabin of a commercial airliner, its target would be the occupants and crew of the same.
For my proposal, the chosen recipient was a provider of funeral goods and services in the United States. This company would be interested in the interior design of a space in which the family and relatives of the deceased could gather in order to share the pain of the loss and show respect and affection for the deceased.
For the creation of this design I have based on the five phases of grief: Denial, anger, sadness, acceptance and learning; synthesizing them in three spaces: Grief, Integration and Acceptance, which in turn are designed from the psychology of color.
In the space of Mourning would be the area where the funeral would be held. Predominated by the color black (representing death, mourning and loneliness) with a central aisle and white walls to generate contrast. Here there would be some seats facing a high table where the urn of the deceased would be placed. At the entrance we would find individual soundproof booths that would give privacy and solitude to those who needed it.
In the integration space, we would find a totally monochromatic design in aqua green (associated with tranquility and hope) with two central sofas forming a circle around a table to encourage verbal communication, being able to share experiences and experiences of the deceased. Written communication would also be present, as desks would be included to write a letter and simulate burning in a steam chimneys that would be at the entrance of the space, making this a more spiritual act. There would also be a projector on the wall of the plane where photos and videos of the deceased and their loved ones would be displayed.
The last space would be that of Acceptance, where a dining room with buffet would be generated, whose predominant color would be blue (associated with a variety of positive qualities such as confidence, rationality and concentration). This space would be covered with semi-transparent fabrics that would fall from the ceiling, simulating an almost celestial dreamlike space. This would give importance to food and its relation to mourning: eating reminds us that we are still alive and that one of our vital functions is to feed ourselves.
In conclusion, this innovative concept of conducting funerals aboard an airplane not only offers a unique and memorable experience to honor departed loved ones, but also provides an atmosphere of tranquility and a special connection to heaven. By combining the dignity of the funeral service with the majesty of flight, families would be offered the opportunity to say goodbye in a meaningful and emotional way. In addition, this proposal would offer flexibility in terms of customized destinations and services, allowing each ceremony to be unique and tailored to each family's individual preferences. A transformation of the way we say goodbye to our loved ones to make the flight to final rest a moving testimony of love and respect.
