Oasis is a revision of the function of the botijo. Today, the traditional botijo has fallen into disuse and its ability to cool water no longer has a place, for this reason the artisans of ceramics in Spain have been closing their workshops but, despite this, there is hope for this great craft work.
These techniques still offer many other applications and ways to reinvent themselves to be desirable in our society, this proposal shows us a new use for terracotta.
The botijos cool the water because they adhere to the surface and as the water evaporates it cools the contents inside, for this proposal we will focus on the water to vaporize from the surface and encourage this effect using a small heat source, a candle.
The mechanism of the new botijo is almost as simple as the previous one, we must know that cold air can contain less humidity compared to warm air, so if we use the ability of a candle to move the air and at the same time its ability to heat the air passing through it we can get a stream of air with a lower relative humidity that will want to absorb the water from the surface of the botijo. When this more humid air meets the cold air, its ability to hold water will decrease again, so what is known as relative humidity will increase, improving comfort in a room with low humidity.
The proposal is to take advantage of these effects by optimizing the design for better performance, placing the greatest amount of water on the surface where the air will be warmest and leaving a small gap underneath for cold air to enter. In addition, this piece, having a candle would also improve the aroma of the room and could use all the variety of effects that different candles have, in addition to giving that subtle warm tone of the light it produces.
